We should not be a republic for a series of very good reasons.  Firstly I note that the voyages of Captain Cook have been said to be of the same ilk as is the American Moon Mission, this I dispute entirely.

The Moon Mission was years in the planning, it was checked and rechecked until every possible element of human error was taken out of the equation and it was state of the art technology that took those astronauts to the moon, where as Cook was given a ship that even for its time was a tub.  It had few cannon for protection, twelve, it was small and cramped and it went about eight knots at full speed, that is favourable weather conditions, so it’s cruising speed would have been somewhere near four to five knots, so the ship was slow, very slow.  The moon mission was years in the planning, whereas Cook was more or less given a ship and told to go and find something.  Apollo Eleven was in contact with NASA during the whole time of the mission, apart from when the landing craft left the mother ship to land on the moon, it was a time frame of around half an hour, whereas Cook lost contact with England as soon as he left port.  Furthermore the knowledge of how to navigate the southern oceans wasn’t completely in place, thus the whole crew relied very heavily on Cook’s ability to navigate the ship safely through uncharted waters.  Cook took twenty-two months to get to this country, granted he spent six months mapping New Zealand, but it was still an awfully long time to be at sea, the moon mission on the other hand took a whole team of computer experts to navigate that craft to the moon and it took far less time for the whole mission to be complete than it did for Cook to just get to this country.  When thinking on the recent Tsunamis’ one realises the dour position Cook was in for that entire voyage, then of course he had four attempts at trying to round the cape, one of the most treacherous strips of ocean in the world, almost anything could have gone wrong, Cook literally set off on a wing and a prayer.  Cook made three such voyages, on the first the ship was almost lost when being torn apart by the Great Barrier Reef, on the second voyage Cook came down with some sort of stomach bug, which he nursed himself through manfully, on the third voyage he was to lose his life by being clubbed and stoned to death and then cannibalised.  I hail the moon mission for what it is, it is the greatest technological achievement in history and I hail it as a triumph as that, but the greatest feat of discovery and exploration is Cooks and Cooks alone.  It is pretty safe to say that he, being an Englishman, would have believed what he was doing was for God, King and Country, he certainly wouldn’t have thought, ‘Gee whiz I hope one day this place becomes a republic’, so too his thoughts for New Zealand would have been for her to stay with the crown.  He is after Christ arguably the bravest man in history, even if he isn’t he has to at least be in amongst the handful of people that rate as the bravest men in history, but with that I challenge anyone to come up with someone else, in fact I defy them!

Our soldiers who fought in the 1st and 2nd World Wars fought bravely and honourably for this country, but I’d say eighty to ninety per cent of them went to war with the belief that what they were doing was for King and Country, which should not be forgotten.  Many died horrible deaths, like in the 1st War when being gassed by mustard gas and seeing their skin blister and peel away, or having their lungs fill with gas and burn their insides as they struggle to breath, or turning to encourage their mates to hurry along as they storm the beach, only to see his head explode as bullets rip through him.  Or in the 2nd World War where an Australian soldier is dying in Changi Prison from disease and starvation, being infested with malaria, or dysentery, or having horrid tropical ulcers eating away at their flesh, yet not even having the medication to make their deaths that bit more pleasant, then of course these soldiers were faced with ongoing psychological and physical problems if they survived the wars once they came out of the armed forces, you cannot honour these men if you disregard what they believed, fought and died for, it’s impossible, because what they fought for, the whole package was honourable.  To say thanks very much for a freedom, but we don’t want your beliefs, no matter their nobility is a slap in the face for those men that fought and died for this country, they deserve better!

Aboriginals, their effort in surviving this land as long as they have is enormous, they even managed to rudimentarily farm, as seen on a program on the ABC late in 2007, but at the time of this country’s discovery, that’s exactly what many European nations were doing, indulging in discovery and exploration, so this place was going to be found, it was simply a question of whom.  The aboriginal people should be thankful it was the British, as they had the best track record when it came to colonising a country with the least amount of disruption to the native population.  One only has to think of what the Spanish Conquistadors did to the native population in South America to acknowledge this, it all could have been much worse for the aboriginal people, so through the drugs, the petrol sniffing, the alcohol, the rape, things that sadly would have happened no matter who was the colonising country, the concession to allow a figure head monarch to preside over our country should be made, she has no political power here anyway.  But there have been some very good things come out of colonisation, like the many role models in the aboriginal community, such as Michael Long, David Gulpilil, Yvonne Cawley, Cathy Freeman, Ernie Dingo, the list could be much, much longer.  We have begun to have aboriginal heath improve and their life span is basically on the rise, yes there are still problems, but gradually they are being addressed.  But I do say this about the aboriginal people, if the greatest feat of discovery and exploration can be said to be Cook’s voyages and the greatest feat of technology can be said to be the moon mission, then the greatest feat of survival has to go to the aboriginal people as a whole, it is a credit to their ingenuity that they survived this land as long as they did, as they arrived in the most inhospitable land possible and flourished.

Migrants: I have no trouble with people coming here from far and wide, I encourage them to bring their culture with them, it can only enhance ours, but for heaven’s sake respect what is in place already, just as I would have to respect another country’s culture should I venture to live there.

If we become a republic we would turn our backs on arguably the second bravest man in history and we would turn our backs on our diggers of World War One and World War Two and we would turn our backs on the fact we have not had a revolution, something that usually goes with becoming a republic and with that would see a President in this country without the respect and regard as does the President in the USA enjoy, it would be a hollow gesture, built on nothing.

I call on my fellow Australians to reject this policy and I compel the Labor Party to erase this, selfish, shallow, ignoble, dishonouring, vandalic and expedient policy from their mandate, it is wrong, black and white it is wrong!  The corner stone of this country is not the first fleet, the corner stone of this country is not federation, the corner stone of this country is simply the fact that this land was found and claimed!

The republic case is tissue thin against what can be brought forward for the crown, I mean please, ‘We want a republic because the Queen doesn’t represent us.’  That is so lame compared to the argument for the crown, it’s weak, it lacks substance, to put it bluntly it’s gutless, as is the policy it so pathetically attempts to support.

As for this present Queen, look at how hard she has worked!  She has gone from country, to country, to country, then back again and back again some more, she has met dignitary after dignitary, she has made speech after speech after speech, she has opened this that and the other, left right and centre and there has to be times when she was bored to tears, yet she has maintained her interest and stayed alert through 99.99 per cent of what she has been called to do, the woman is a Trojan!  She did not want the job she has been given and for much of her youth she would have believed that she most likely would not have had to do it.  But she has embraced it and worked herself into the dust!  Her and her family have worked and worked very hard, yes her offspring have had personal problems, most people do, just because you are royalty doesn’t mean you are immune to such things, but the fact that they have worked hard cannot be ignored.  Still her efforts alone have more than earned the loyalty of this country to the crown.

England has already made concessions to us, she readily allowed federation, she agreed to our own Governor-General, she acquiesced to our want for our own national anthem, she helped organise and authorise our own coat of arms, she agreed to our own flag, surely it is time to give back, or are we going to continually take?

If we become a republic and I am the only person to vote against it, because that I’ll surely do, then I’ll be the only person in this country that can truly hold my head up high, because I will be the only person in this country who is right.

The content of this argument can easily be adapted and applied to New Zealand, as they too have a history that indicates loyalty to the crown.

The truth of us becoming a republic would see us become the laughing stock of the world, as we would easily be accused of being the country with no principles and the country that couldn’t work out our own history when it is only 240 years old if one takes it from when the written history of this country began, in short if we value our history then a republic should not be, period!

STATEMENT FROM ROB OAKESHOTT

1. I have had no contact from the Independent Commission Against Corruption about any issues raised by the Daily Telegraph or the NSW Opposition.
2. According to an article by the Daily Telegraph, the complaint was referred by the NSW Opposition, however in an article in the Port Macquarie News (attached), both NSW Liberal Party Leader Barry O’Farrell and NSW Leader of the Nationals Andrew Stoner have distanced themselves from any further responsibility relating to this story.

A secret map of Melbourne’s transport plans for the next 30 years was published in The Age yesterday. Doubts were raised about its authenticity (weakly, unconvincingly) by the Victorian government.

Average householders may shrug, but this is a treasure map for property pirates speculators.

“Here be Gold, mateys! Arrgh!”

Knowing when and where new links are planned is a gift to landowners who can lay themselves down in the path of progress.

Let me outline two strategies regularly employed to capitalize on knowledge like this.

Speculators can buy land next to proposed roads. Once the road is announced, areas by freeway exits are suddenly attractive to home buyers and broad acres can be subdivided and sold off as house blocks. Developers complain loud and long about infrastructure levies, but these costs are a fraction of the riches available to this time-honored wealth building technique.

Melbourne’s secret map shows the proposed urban growth boundary with new residential areas helpful colored in pink, in case speculators are a little slow on the uptake.

A quicker road to riches is to buy directly in the path of the new freeway – which cannot go through until the government owns all the land it needs.  By refusing to sell and hanging on until the bitter end, determined landowners can get a payout of up to three time market prices – prices already inflated by the imminent road construction.

Neither plan is for the faint-hearted or impatient.  Equally, neither plan requires the landowner to do much, just sit and wait for the suburbs to grow out to them.

Is buying farmland and holding it for many years for a certain capital gain a good use for limited capital?  Does this investment strategy create jobs?  Does this add to the economy? To the common good?

It does none of these things.  Further, the gains can be taken when it suits the owner – taxed at a discounted rate.

My blood boils when I see wealth handed to land owners who do no more than exploit the monopoly character of land.

A Golden Age beckons to any country willing to stare down landowners.  Their investments do no work. They take no risks.  They demand a free ride.  They insist we defer to their wishes and opinions.  Meanwhile the majority of humanity sweats for ever dollar they make.

The passionate commitment of Prosper Australia to the greater use of Land Tax and the reduction of other behaviour-distorting taxes is plain and clear.  We welcome the awakening of others to exactly this direction.

The mainstream media makes me laugh. I may not be qualified enough to make critical comments about the quality of our journalists. I am sure that if any professional journo happened to read this post, then they could tear me apart about my style of writing or my knowledge of the job they actually do.

However I do feel that I can speak as an everyday Australian that reads, listens or watches the work that they do. And I have to say that although not all but at least a very large proportion of what they do is lazy and ill informed.

I will honestly say that there are a small minority that do the work to report an unbiased, cross referenced and informed report of the issues. But for the most part the news that is presented by the mass media is opinion rather than impartial, is marketing rather than news or is simply cut and pasted from a media release that requires very little if any research.

To explain myself a little, the past few days have left me more than a little frustrated with the sausage machine style reporting on the new parliament arrangements. The media has been reporting to the Australian people that with the Coalition stepping away from the deal done with the independents regarding pairing of the speaker that this could leave the Government with only a one seat majority rather than two.

This leads me to believe that they do not understand or just don’t care to make the effort to report the facts.

The Government does not have any majority. The Greens and independents have only agreed to support the Labor Party on votes of No Confidence and Supply which has allowed them to form government. For all other Legislation or even a simple Division on the floor, they can’t guarantee anything.

Sure not pairing the speaker or losing any vote for whatever reason is a big deal but please report it for what it is not just what is easy. There are so many other ways the government may miss out on a vote and they are equally important to report. The opposition is going to be very touch on what they will accept as legitimate reasons to be absent from a vote. I had noticed that last year a member missed a division because he was in the toilet, at the time not so important but may be disastrous in this parliament. Good luck to the whips your work has just got much harder.

If anybody had been out of touch during the two weeks after the election but was now catching the media coverage, they would think that the Labor party had simply won the election with a small majority.

How is this kind of reporting helping the Australian people to understand how their government will operate? The independents and many Australians are sick to death of the two party merry go round yet the media don’t seem to be able to break away from thinking that there is only the Red or Blue options. As I said earlier “don’t understand or just don’t care” about the reality that faces this parliament.

So I say to all journalists (not just the political ones) remember what your job is. Report the facts as they are and don’t worry about if it matches some tired old model of fitting into a box of required ingredients. And please try and take the time to actually understand the content of your work. That’s when the Australian people will start to accept your work with some credibility again.

Congratulations to all successful candidates of the 2010 Federal election.

We have had 150 members elected to the Lower House of Parliament and Australia looks forward to your contributions.

To the new Greens member Adam Bandt and the new independent from Tasmania Andrew Wilkie we all wish you the best and look forward to your contributions on the floor. You will receive more media than any first term members in the history of the Australian parliament. Don’t let them get to you and remember why you went into politics.

The Upper House has all but been confirmed and candidates can feel  reasonably safe of their positions.

This election we have seen the Greens earn the largest number of representatives in their history with nine senators. It does look as though the DLP will have a new Senator elected (their first in 35 years) and with Nick Xenophon still having one term to serve we have a very large representation from the non majors.

So to all the returning and new members from all political views, GOOD LUCK.

You have offered yourself to take up a very important position, we now look to you to lead our country for the next three years.

THANK YOU.

At this point most people think that Labor will be the party to form Government from the 2010 federal election. With the Greens Adam Bandt and the Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie offering their support for a Gillard lead Government; Labor has taken front position in the race to control the Australian Parliament.

But whatever way the remaining country independent choose to fall with their support will decide the victor, unless they choose to not support any party. That would of course see us going to another election. This will however be the least possible result, yet still the chance is there.

Many people have argued the merits of the voters in those electorates being the ones to have chosen the parliamentarians that may decide who forms a Government. But I say that is the way our system works and personally I think it is great. In fact I think it is a good reminder to the Australian people that although the major parties would like you to think that on Election Day you are voting for Tony Abbott or Julia Gillard in some form of a presidential kind election. You are in fact voting for a local member that may or may not be a member of either of those parties.

We need to value our vote and not take it for granted. When I was growing up in country Victoria my family were not much into politics nor were the families of many of my friends. I was told many things not very complimentary about politics and politicians. One however was that it didn’t really matter much who you vote for because all politicians are (insert any number of suitable noun here) and your vote won’t make any difference anyway.

How wrong they were. Yes we can discuss how the voters of places like the electorates of Lyons, New England or Kennedy have had a big say. But really those members although they are wielding enormous power but they won with big leads in the vote.

No what I mean is the voters of the very close marginal electorates. It now looks as though we know how the numbers will fall in the seat count and without getting into the discussion around if the WA National member will sit in the Coalition or the cross bench. I think we all know that wear it counts he is with the Coalition. So that considered we have the

Coalition on 73

Labor with 72

And the Greens and independents with 5

With any party hoping to form Government needing 76 I am not breaking any news to say it is close.

Knowing the two members mentioned previously supporting Labor that takes them to 74.

But this is where it gets interesting, let’s look at the seat of Corangamite. As I write this post the numbers look like this in the two parties preferred,

Liberal – Sarah Henderson 46,473

Labour – Darren Cheeseman 47,238

A difference of only 765 votes.

What if say 400 of those voters reversed their vote giving the seat to the Liberal party, making the numbers Coalition 74 and Labor 71.

This could make all the difference as for Labor to claim the win they would need the support of all the cross benchers and this would almost make it impossible for them to claim a stable government and Tony Abbott would only need two. Also if he was to get all three country independents he would have a tidy little buffer and may get support from Andrew Wilkie making it nice and safe.

Wow 400 votes may have totally swung the election, kind of destroys the theory that any one vote doesn’t have much power.

I also know that early in the election the Victorian Branch of the Liberal party were just going through the motion as they didn’t really give themselves much hope of doing well in this state. That’s not to say they were not trying at all but they were not pulling out all stops until later in the election when the polls improved.

The moral of this story is if you are a voter or a political party; do not take any single vote for granted.
